Burning Instructions/Safety

In general, our gels burn 3 to 5 times longer than paraffin wax, dollar for dollar. Scented tealights burn 8 to 10 hours each. Unscented tealights burn 10 to 12 hours each. Tealights are easy maintenance in that there is no minimum burn time and no trimming required. For other gel styles, however, getting maximum burning hours depends on good burning practices. In our experience of burning thousands of candles, we have found it is important to liquify as much of the surface of the candle as possible the very first time you burn it. You establish the burning memory with the first burn, so it's important to do it right if you don't want your candle to burn with a well. Since gel candles are very slow burning, it takes anywhere from 2 to 12 hours to liquify the surface. The wider the neck of the candle, the longer the burning requirement. Please follow the chart below when burning your candle for the first time:

Oyster cup or votive   2-4 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
#1 Urn   4-6 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
#2 Urn   6-8 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
Toppers   6-8 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
Wine Glass   6-8 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
Shamrock   8-10 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
#3 Urn or Jar   8-10 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
#4 Urn or Jar   8-10 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
Martini Glass   8-10 hrs    extinguish and trim every 4 hrs
#5 Urn 10-12 hrs

   extinguish and trim every 4 hrs

Margarita 10-12 hrs

   extinguish and trim every 4 hrs

The best time to trim and clean is the minute you extinguish the candle. Dip a wooden coffee stirrer or similar object into the liquid gel on the surface of the candle and drizzle the gel onto the hot wick. It will cool the ash instantly. Remove any black wick pieces with the stirrer and wipe them onto a paper towel or napkin. (Do not allow black wick pieces to remain in the candle as it cools, because then you will be forced to dig them out — a process that leaves ugly craters in the candle surface!) Once all floating pieces have been removed, trim the wick short with sharp, pointed scissors and remove excess. Then relight the candle.

All you need is a stub of a wick, about 1/8" long. A short wick keeps the flame close to the gel for better illumination of the candle and also reduces buildup of gel or airborne particles (dust, etc.).

Sometimes drizzling gel onto the wick each time the candle is extinguished will cause a buildup of gel that can make the wick smoke. Fortunately this is very easy to correct. Lightly spray a small corner of paper towel with window cleaner. Drape over the top of a cooled wick and, using the nails of your thumb and index finger, stroke the wick upward. Turn the towel 90 degrees and stroke upward once more. Then relight.
You will get the best and safest performance from your candle if you:
  • Never leave the candle burning unattended;
  • Keep children and pets away from the open candle flame;
  • Keep the candle out of direct sunlight, otherwise it will cloud;
  • Keep the candle upright and out of drafts. Drafts cause smoke;
  • Burn on heat-safe surface; and
  • Discontinue use when 1/2" of gel remains in the candle.

Helpful hints. Never burn the candle more than 4 continuous hours without extinguishing it to trim the wick. If you do, you risk scorching the thin melt pool on the surface and turning it an ugly shade of brown. If the chart below calls for a period of time in excess of 4 hours, simply extinguish the candle every 3 to 4 hours, trim the wick and relight the candle until the melt pool approaches the sides of the glass. The smokeless wick will produce a small "collar" of gel around the candle in the larger sizes. This gel collar will eventually be melted by the flame when the candle is about halfway gone.

Very important! Please bear in mind that all ingredients in your oceanscape are real. In smaller styles the starfish must be watched as the gel level approaches the bottom of the candle. If you tend to burn your candle for long periods of time, despite our instructions to extinguish it every 4 hours for cleaning and trimming, the starfish might wind up tipping toward the center of the candle. If you notice this happening, take a wooden coffee stirrer, pencil, or similar object and push the starfish outward toward the side of the glass container. If it touches the flame, it will burn and you will have an unwanted extra wick in your candle!

Delivery Times: In-Stock vs. Custom Orders

Our oceanscape candles are stocked in the Top 26 fragrances in all five sizes of our popular Urn, as well as in some Margaritas. We have found shelled styles outsell unshelled styles by about 3 to 1, because the artistic oceanscapes illuminate when the candle burns and every oceanscape is different from the next. Truly beautiful to watch in a darkened room.

Unshelled versions of the same fragrances are stocked in the #1, #2, #3 and #4 Urns. If we are temporarily out of stock on any candle, your order could take up to 2 weeks to arrive in Newport before being shipped to you. In the warm months of the year we usually get one truck per week from Ohio. In the cold months, we don't order as frequently.

Ceramics are made to order by Ruthe Jubinville, so please allow extra time. They usually arrive in the Newport store in one to two weeks from the time the order is placed. If the order involves a medium or large lamp, an additional week is allowed for the candle to be poured in Ohio. In the case of a specific dog or cat breed for which the decals are not in stock, it will take a few days longer.

In the case of priority orders or products needed for a special date, we will have your item drop shipped from Ohio if necessary. If it is critical that your order arrive by a certain date, please indicate such in the message box normally used for Gift Card messages. That way we can contact you by email with any difficulty as soon as we receive your order.

What to do if your candle arrives with a slanted surface.

If your candle was shipped on its side, despite our putting THIS END UP labels all over the box, the gel surface may be slanted and the wick pushed off-center. Fortunately this is easy to fix.

  • Heat oven to 200° and put candle(s) in a baking pan in the center of the oven. Be sure to remove lid(s) first.
  • Set the oven timer for 20 minutes.
  • Depending on the size of the candle, it will take anywhere from 20-60 minutes for the gel to get soft enough to pull the wick back to center with tweezers. The surface of the candle will level out pretty rapidly, but if the wick has to be re-centered the gel will need more time to soften in the oven.
  • Reset the timer and check the candle every 20 minutes until the wick can be moved easily with tweezers. Grasp the wick firmly and drag it to center with a sideways motion. Do not pull up or you may dislodge the wick from the bottom of the candle.
  • Use an oven mitt to remove the candle, taking care to keep the candle straight so the gel doesn't spill, and set it on the kitchen counter. Allow the candle to cool completely before handling.

Toxins in Burning Candles, Candle Wicks, and Incense

A collection of important articles regarding the dangers of wax candles can be found at this web site: http://www.anapsid.org/cnd/mcs/candles.html

Is gel safer than wax?

Our candles are made from medical-grade white mineral oil, the same gel used by the pharmaceuticals industry to coat our gel capsules. When burned according to directions, they will give you many clean, beautiful, fragrant hours of burning. In fact, they burn 3 to 5 times longer than paraffin candles, dollar for dollar. And they are a "green" product as well! When the candle is gone, just remove the wick and wick tab with pliers and place the urn upside down in the dishwasher. Place the lid on the top shelf. The glass urn and lid finish sparkling clean and ready for immediate use. The unit is foodsafe and airtight.

Much has been made of the myth of the "exploding gel candle." The myth is propagated by wax marketing people, because alternative fuels like soy and gel have made a significant dent in their sales. In actuality, gel candles do not explode. When made correctly and burned according to directions, the only part that liquifies is the top eighth-inch of gel. Therefore the candle burns cool to the touch. It is the melting of that top layer that releases all the wonderful fragrance, because the product is heat-sensitive.

Our candles, when cold, release only about 35 percent of their fragrance. It is the melting of the top layer that triggers the release of the intricate notes that combine with the large fragrance notes. The result is wonderful fragrance that lasts all the way to the bottom of the candle!

________________________________________________________________

Paraffin is the “bottom of the barrel” of the petroleum refining chain, remaining even after asphalt is extracted. In its Proposition 65 Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, the California legislature identified at least seven major toxins released into the air when wax candles are burned. Three of these toxins -- toluene, benzene and napthalene --  can cause cancer.

The EPA is on its second study of “Transmission of Particular Matter through Burning Candles”. All toxins are present in the micro-particles of greasy black soot released by even the most expensive wax candles. This soot deposits itself on the insides of your lungs every time you inhale. If you’ve ever tried to scrape hardened wax off a flat surface, just imagine it clinging to your lung tissue! At high risk for health damage are children, pets and those with compromised immune systems — i.e., asthma, allergies, cancer, etc.*

Why haven't you heard about this up to now? Over 90 percent of our National Candle Association's members are involved with wax candles and nobody wanted to kill the $4 billion a year cash cow. In this economy, profits before people is the mantra. They'll make money first and worry about us later.

Our government collects hazardous product tariffs on all wax candles that float into this country from China and India, because neither country regulates lead. That means in addition to all the toxins in the paraffin, you can add the chance there will be lead in the wick. Then those same hazardous products are allowed to be stocked and sold to us by retailers such as the Dollar Store, Wal-Mart, Christmas Tree Shops, Pier One Imports, Illuminations, Bombay Company and Pottery Barn.

Why? When products are made with 35-cent-an-hour labor, the profits are too good to pass up. Buy for pennies — sell for dollars. Corporate greed.

We at Gelissimo are morally committed to protecting both the health of our customers and the health of the U.S. economy. We do this by purchasing only from domestic manufacturers and artisans. Thank you for supporting our efforts.
